abroad in new york

"One of the joys of the daily New York Sun–the new New York Sun–is Francis Morrone's excellent column on city architecture; it gives Lewis Mumford's famous 'Skyline' column a run for its money."
–James Panero, The New Criterion

Francis Morrone began writing his weekly column, "Abroad in New York," for the New York Sun on April 19, 2002, on the Friday of the paper's first week of existence. He hasn't missed a week since. The column now appears every Thursday. It's a column on New York buildings and history. It attempts to relate new development and changes in the environment to the dynamics of New York's fast-paced history.

You may want to read the Sun every day. One reason is that the more broadsheets a city has, the better. However much you may like the Times, you have to wonder how New York--New York!--ever ended up a one-broadsheet town. (London has four.) A better reason to read the Sun every day is that it has the best arts and sports commentary of any New York paper, among much else, and Morrone, in addition to writing his Thursday column, frequently reviews books and exhibitions for the Sun.

"One of the undiscussed developments in NY newspapering is that the New York Sun outdoes the New York Times in arts coverage--in fact, is downright embarrassing the paper....The Sun has superb dance coverage from Joel Lobenthal, excellent architectural criticism by James Gardner and Francis Morrone, and sports coverage that doesn't condescend to soccer and tennis."
